Do We Really Have To Do That?
This
is a question some businesses really have a hard time answering. Of
course, the answer to this question is 'no'. No business entity has to
do anything. There are no rules, regulations or requirements that will
force you get involved in Facebook, Twitter or any of the other social
technologies that are so popular today. Certainly you can decide not to
use these. But, before you do, take a moment to consider the following
survey results, published in a recent Research Brief report by
Retreveo.

|
Q. Do
you check Facebook or Twitter before going to bed?
A. A resounding 48% of users said 'Yes, during the night or as soon as
I wake up'.
Really? During the night?
Q. Do
You Update
Facebook or Twitter after going to bed?
A. 19% of people under age 25 responded 'Any time I wake up'.
32% of people under age 25 responded 'As soon as I wake up in the
morning'.
Huh?
Q. Do
You Check /
Update Twitter/Facebook First Thing In The Morning?
a. 42% responded 'Yes'
These are just a few highlights from the Retrevo report. The full
version can be accessed here: (http://www.retrevo.com/content/blog/2010/03/social-media-new-addiction%3F)
Let's think about this for a moment. Suppose the question began with
'Do you read the newspaper during the night or as soon as you wake up?
Now, if 48% of people woke up in the middle of the night and grabbed
that newspaper and began to read it, or if 42% of people grabbed that
newspaper the moment they opened their eyes in the morning, you would
most likely be running a full page advertisement in that newspaper day
after day, would you not?
If so, think about how much running a newspaper ad every single day
might cost in your market.
Hmmm. . .
The gist of the article is that social media usage now borders on
addictive behavior for a very large percentage of the population. While
a large percentage of the public rejects traditional advertising, they
teeter on the brink of being addicted to social media technology. I
feel certain we shall soon see Twitter 12 Step programs popping up all
over the place.
Never before in history have people been so loyal to a form of
technology that can, if used properly, deliver a marketing message to
millions of eyeballs. If you do not have a presence on these social
media outlets, chances are that you are going to be virtually invisible
to that very large percentage of people who are loyal to these tools.
So ask yourself - wouldn't it make sense to consider using a vehicle
that appeals to people in such large numbers?
And doesn't it make even more sense to take advantage of this
technology when the cost per impression is nearly zero?
Only you can judge whether this makes sense for you, your product, your
service or your business. se you to be nearly
invisible to
those
who matter – your potential clients.
