[Annapolis MD, April 30, 2013] Maryland children’s book author Kristin Barnes is now
appearing on The Children’s Authors Show radio. In her interview she
discusses her latest release, ‘Haysoos the Honu’.
Haysoos the Honu is a Hawaiian sea turtle. He loves the company of
other sea creatures, but he feels different from the fish, eels, and
manta rays. His bulky shell slows him down, and his lungs mean he has
to interrupt playtime to surface for air. Haysoos believes that being
different is a bad thing, until he meets a special friend who shows him
just how special it is to be different.
“I wrote this children’s
book,” Barnes stated, “to share a message of self-acceptance to both
children and adults with a character pulled from my own life to whom
all age groups can relate. Sea turtles are amazing creatures to
begin with; Haysoos' personality mixes well with his physical
attributes to effectively communicate the idea that we are perfect the
way we are made - it's our perspective that changes everything and
makes life the joyful experience it should be.”
Kristin Barnes
understands what it means to be different. She made history as the
first female aircrew to report to the F14 community in 1993 and spent
the rest of her flying career as the sole female aviator in her
squadrons. Kristin experienced first-hand the challenges of fitting
into a male-dominated culture. Shared with children through an
age-appropriate story, Haysoos is a simple yet compelling demonstration
of Kristin’s real-life experiences.
"Children will benefit from
reading Haysoos' story,” Barnes continued, “by seeing his perspective
on life transform throughout the story. Through his example, they
too can see that their talents, gifts and abilities are truly unique
and worthy of appreciation. We are each special in our own way when we
embrace those characteristics that define as well as differentiate us."
