At age twenty he joined The U.S. Marine Corps He started out in the infantry and in a short time moved into the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) field, which is the military equivalent of the bomb squad. He performed those duties until he retired. He continued with the same job as a civilian spending 3 years in Iraq. After Iraq he took a different career path and became a professional golf instructor and a certified professional club fitter.
